Background
Rochus was born 31 years ago to Slade and Gail Arbell alongside his twin sister, Pye, in Oxburn. The twins were near-opposite one another; Pye being the more energetic and loudmouthed child who often played in the fields, and Rochus being more timid and attached to his mother’s side. Rochus began showing interest in medicine and healing due to his mother’s chronically poor health. Whenever she would visit the Temple of Chauntea for aid, young Rochus would interrogate her afterwards on all the details. What’s happening to you? How are they treating it? Etc. Eventually, Gail started bringing her son along with her. The cleric Coran Hartwood was charmed by the boy’s enthusiasm, and took him in as his apprentice at age 12.
Rochus was a very diligent apprentice to Cleric Hartwood, eager to learn medicine and help his community. The people of Oxburn respected young Rochus due to how attentive and careful he was to those seeking his aid. However, with the intense focus on his studies, Rochus found less and less time available to spend with his family and friends. His apprenticeship was completed by his 19th birthday. Cleric Hartwood assisted him in his duties for roughly 2 more years before retiring from his position.Mushroom Madness spoilers begin
Warning!
The following section is spoilers for the Mushroom Madness campaign.
Nine years before the present, Rochus’s mother became ill with another disease. Determined to help his mother, Rochus took on nearly every duty associated with caring for her and attempting to understand the disease. But then the disease spread. The clergy was wearing itself thin trying to control the mystery illness, but Rochus took it farther than others. He lost sleep, neglected hygiene, and refused meals in the name of healing. His fellow clergymen and Oxburn citizens offered him relief, but every one of them was turned down. At some point, any non-infected person entering his vicinity was immediately snapped at. In his mind, to accept help would be to discredit his healing abilities. Rochus wanted to prove himself. He failed. His mother and countless others were taken by the disease, and now lay as mossy mounds in the ruins of Oxburn.
Early during the mass-exodus from Oxburn, some refugees held a vigil for those who were lost. Rochus, incredibly shaken and full of guilt, refused to show. After everything he had done, this act infuriated his sister Pye. She confronted him after the vigil, calling him out for his refusal of help. They spiraled into an argument that ended with Rochus wordlessly packing his things and leaving into the night.
Mushroom Madness spoilers end
While Rochus continued his duties as a cleric as well as ever, his demeanor permanently changed. He was colder. Giving the hurt or sick the best care he could, but not offering much comfort. He sometimes would chide his patients for getting injured in the first place. He began to resent his god Chauntea for allowing such a plague to descend upon his home. Yet still he prays. What else is he to do? What is the cleric without his god?
Personality
Rochus is commonly described as cold and irritable. He speaks little, intently listening and only butting in to correct facts or to challenge something he disagrees with. It is difficult to change his mind or make him back down. He is the kind of guy who, if you told him you made a mistake, he would most likely tell you to not fuck it up next time instead of comforting you. He is very lonely inside. He would rather die than let you know that.
If he grows closer to his party members or if he lets certain people back into his life, he will heal. He’ll let the Rochus that was before come to the surface. Warm, understanding. Caring to the point of smothering. He wants to apologize to everyone for what he did. He's too scared to admit he was wrong. He wants to go home. He never will be able to.
